Kupu-kupu merupakan kelompok serangga yang tergolong ke dalam ordo Lepidoptera pada kelas insekta yang dicirikan dengan sayap tertutup oleh sisik. Ordo Lepidoptera memiliki 5 family termasuk 4 family yang telah ditemukan di Pulau Ternate diantaranya; 1) famili Papilionidae, 2) famili Nymphalidae, 3) famili Pieridae, dan 4) famili Lycaenidae. Keempat famili ini telah diidentifikasi dan didaptkan sebanyak 50 spesies dan 367 individu yang tersebar di berbagai habitat di Pulau Ternate. Jenis kupu-kupu yang telah ditemukan ini termasuk juga kupu-kupu endemik yang berada di kepulauan Maluku Utara yaitu kupu-kupu famili Papilionidae genus Troides dan genus Papilio (lihat bagian 4, mengenal spesies kupu-kupu lokal dan habitatnya di PulauTternate). Pulau Ternate merupakan satu dari 395 pulau yang menjadi bagian dari Provinsi Maluku Utara. Pulau Ternate memiliki kekayaan spesies yang tinggi, salah satunya adalah kupu- kupu. Ada 4 famili kupu-kupu yang dapat ditemukan di Pulau Ternate yaitu Papilionidae, Nymphalidae, Pieridae, dan Lycaenidae. Masing-masing famili ini terdiri atas 5 spesies dari Famili Papilionidae, 29 spesies dari Famili Nymphalidae, 7 spesies dari Famili Pieridae, dan 9 spesies dari Famili Lycaenidae. Total spesies kupu-kupu yang ditemukan di Pulau Ternate adalah 50 spesies. Buku ini ditulis untuk melengkapi informasi terkini tentang keberadaan dan eksistensi kupu-kupu lokal Pulau Ternate, Buku ini merupakan buku referensi yang menyajikan data terkini tentang kupu-kupu lokal Pulau Ternate.
